GAY PEOPLE'S CHRONICLE 11

Richard L. Lehmann

The life of Richard L. Lehmann came to an unexpected and premature end at the age of 35 due to complications of AIDS on Sep-

tember 21 at St. Mary's Hospital in Knoxville, Tenn.

Rick had lived his life with AIDS with courage and vitality. He had become seriously ill only a few short weeks prior to his death. A private service was held in Knox-

ville on September 22 at the Rose Mortuary Highland Chapel. In gratitude for his life, a memorial service was held in Cleveland on September 27 at Archwood United Church of Christ, the Reverend David Bahr officiating. Many family, friends, and colleagues in attendance gave testimony to Rick's engaging spirit and love of people.

Rick, born in Marblehead, Mass., February 12, 1960, was a 1978 graduate of Charles F. Brush High School in Lyndhurst. From that era, he fostered many enduring friendships. He attended the Ohio State University School of Allied Health Professions and received a bachelor of science degree in medical dietetics in 1987.

A registered dietitian, Rick was employed at Warrensville Developmental Center. He was known for his exuberant enthusiasm for his relationship with clients and colleagues, fondly referring to his "lunch bunch" from work. Professionally, he had served as officers in the Cleveland Dietetic Association and the Cleveland Consultant Dietitians in Health Care Facilities.

Known for his love of a good time, he had an uncanny ability to turn a mundane mo-

ment into laughter, merriment, and surprise. In Susan Flowers' eulogy, he was described as "having a part of him that was like Peter Pan........ refusing to grow up, insisting that there should always be fun and adventure in life. Enjoying Lake Erie and boating, an eclectic music collection, movies, fast cars, and vacations, Rick left us lessons to make time for fun and to enjoy the excitement of being alive.

Although leaving us with these lessons, Rick did experience his solemn thoughts and difficulties living with AIDS. He rallied to become an active member of the HIV community. Serving as a committee member of the AIDS Task Force of Greater Cleveland,

he was a primary organizer of the Boat Party AIDS benefit in June. Additionally, he was a participant of the Ohio AIDS Coalition Healing Weekend and of several support groups

at the Cleveland Free Clinic.

Rick is survived by his partner David L. Jones, parents Mary K. Nolan and Louis E. Lehmann, sisters Lori L. Jackson and Debra L. Lehmann, nephews Tyler and Evan Jackson, uncles Richard S. Kenyon and Wendall J. Butt, as well as many other dear friends, including special friend and confidant Christian Walton.

New atheists' group

To the Editors:

Gay and Lesbian Atheists and Humanists, GALAH, shares in the freethought community's mourning of the death of American Gay and Lesbian Atheists' leader Don Sanders due to AIDS complications, His dedication to and accomplishments for the atheist, AIDS, and gay-lesbian-bi communities were truly admirable. We were surprised and disappointed that he was not able to find a way to have that organization continue after his death.

Historically, GALAH primarily has been a local organization in Los Angeles. However, we recognize that there are atheists throughout the country who were members of AGLA who would like to be part of a

lesbian-gay-bi freethought organization. In response to this situation, GALAH is inviting former AGLA members to send for information to GALAH, P.O. Box 15803, Los Angeles, CA 90015. Atheists, humanists, and other freethinkers who were not members of AGLA are welcome to do the same. Thomas Klem, Chair Gay and Lesbian Atheists and Humanists Los Angeles
